About Us
The Space Monkey character was made by three Lads: Leo, Atlas, and Dalton.
We are three authors, who are brothers, and represent L.A.D. Publishing.
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
We've wanted to collaborate on a book for a long time. We've all been inspired to be writers and our parents and teachers always commended us for creativity and writing. We wanted to learn about things that we were interested in, such as science, astronomy, and space.
Did something in particular inspire you to write this book?
On February 28, 2021, the Mars Perseverance Rover landed on Mars. We were in the car with our dad and listening to the broadcast on the radio. We were inspired by the teams that worked on the Mars rovers. We learned that no human had ever visited Mars and that before people, monkeys were sent to space. The initial idea for Space Monkey was born! We remain in awe of the teamwork needed and the Physicists, Astronauts, Engineers, and Entrepreneurs who work together to make space travel a reality! We are all proud of being able to share Space Monkey with others and plan to create an entire series as he explores the solar system. We are fortunate to have great mentors who support our ideas and each of us. We knew exactly what we wanted to do! We wanted to write about Space Monkey and his journey through our solar system in order to encourage a similar admiration for space, in kids all over the world!
What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
We usually write and edit on weekends when we are not in school. We each have a writing desk, but we prefer to gather around the kitchen table, surrounded by our iPads for research, snacks for creativity, and our mini-labradoodle, Honey, for company and entertainment.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
We enjoy being outside when we are not writing or working on our iPads or computers! We enjoy basketball, football, tennis, and hanging out with friends.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
We didn't know much about Mars or the other planets in our solar system at the time of creating the Space Monkey character. We learned a lot more than we expected to, by being curious and researching various facts and presenting them in a way that was fun and memorable for us and other kids.
What do you think makes a good story?
A good story, like Space Monkey, has: 1) a simple, easy-to-follow plot, 2) a likable and identifiable central character, 3) interesting and engaging facts, 4) amazing and high-quality illustrations, and 5) interest from a broad audience.
What are you hoping readers take away from reading your book?
We hope that Space Monkey will inspire children to be curious about the world around them, learn some interesting facts about our solar system, take an interest in astronomy and some day decide to travel to space themselves!
Do you have any pets?
Honey is our mini-labradoodle and confidante. She has a light brown, honey-colored fur tone and a childlike face. Her brown eyes are stunning. Her fur is soft and silky. She has white, furry paw mittens on three of her four paws and a white shield on her chest. Her favorite activities include playing catch and eating treats while wagging her tail. She is very playful and entertaining and a joy to be around!
